President | Lindsay Burke (Dalhousie University)

Lindsay is a new graduate from the Dalhousie University School of Nursing. She has accepted a job at the QEII Hospital in Halifax Nova Scotia on the Burns & Plastics Unit. Within Nursing Lindsay has been extremely involved with her profession. She was the student representative on the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia pilot project for her graduating class. She was formerly involved with the Dalhousie Nursing Society and the DAL Health Science Students’ Association. Lindsay became involved with DalHSSA by attending their annual general meeting in 2007 and immediately became involved. There she ran and was elected for the position of Vice President Events for the 2007-2008 academic term. She was also elected for this NaHSSA position in 2008 at the Annual Conference in London Ontario while representing Dalhousie’s local chapter and later went on to be elected as president. Lindsay has a passion for interprofessional education and has been a leader of interprofessionalism within her own university . She has provided student feedback at the Dalhousie University Academic Forum exploring ways to increase Interprofessional Education for Collaborative Patient-Centered Practice within the Dalhousie curriculum and community. She is also co-facilitating Interprofessional and Contributor Education Sessions across Nova Scotia for the Models of Care initiative. This year in her role as President, Lindsay is eager to lead NaHSSA as it continues to grow and advocate for positive change in interprofessional education & policy both in Canada & internationally.

VP Student Affairs | Tyler Law (Queen's University)

Tyler is currently a second year medical student at Queen’s University. He is new to the world of interprofessional collaboration (IPC), but brings to NaHSSA experience from having worked at both WHO headquarters in Geneva, and the UK Department of Health in London. He completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences at McMaster University, with specific interests towards health policy, knowledge translation and global health. Tyler’s interest in IPC stems from these interests, and sees IPC as part of an evidence-based solution to human health resource shortages and effective healthcare spending. He will be working this year to promote NaHSSA’s agenda, develop policy and interact with policymakers, as well as facilitate involvement of NaHSSA’s Board of Directors (drawn from chapters across the country). He is looking forward to promoting interprofessionalism on a national level, and enhancing his understanding of collaborative care.

VP Academic Affairs | Lisa Fu (McMaster University)

Lisa Fu is entering her 1st year of Medical Studies at McMaster University. She has been an active member of the McMaster NaHSSA chapter for the past three years and is serving her second term as Co-Chair of the chapter. Her passion for IPE has driven her involvement in the advocacy of IPE to students throughout the faculty of health sciences. She has worked on getting excellent support from the faculty and currently sits as a student representative on the McMaster Health Sciences Educational Council and the Program for Interprofessional Education Advisory Group. In her term as VP Academic Affairs, she would like to focus on strengthening the tie between NaHSSA chapters and their respective educational institutions. Aside from IPE, Lisa is involved with promoting healthy living with the Heart and Stroke Foundation and volunteering in a group home for adults with disabilities. Lisa is excited to be part of a national interprofessional team and be an advocate for IPE throughout the nation.

VP Legal and Finance | Linda Vi (University of Western Ontario)

Linda Vi has recently completed her undergraduate degree in Health Sciences from the University of Western Ontario, and will be pursuing a Master’s of Science in Physiology degree at Western in September. Her long term goal is to combine her interest in biomedical research with her passion for medicine as a clinician-scientist working in an interdisciplilnary field. She has been actively involved in interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives, serving as Vice Chair for the London Interprofessional Healthcare Students’ Association, as well as, sitting on the NaHSSA advisory council this past year. She also has an interest in health promotion and is the co-founder and past-chair for a student-led health promotion program for children, called Learning it Together, which she and her team is working to make more interdisciplinary. Linda is excited to be part of the NaHSSA executive team this year and as VP legal and finance, she plans to work with NaHSSA and the chapters to ensure the sustainability of the association, during this time of economic hardship.

VP Internal | Lindsay Hubenig (University of Saskatchewan)

Lindsay is a 2nd year medical student at the University of Saskatchewan. Prior to medical school Lindsay completed a BSc in Kinesiology at the University of Alberta and became certified as an Exercise Physiologist through CSEP. He first exposure to inter-professional practice began as an athlete on the Canadian National Synchronized Swimming Team. As a member of the National Team she was surrounded by a myriad of professionals including physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, nutritionists, psychologists and the team sport physician. These health professionals worked with coaches and trainers to keep the athletes healthy and injury free so they could train 50 hours a week and compete on the world stage.

As an exercise physiologist prescribing exercise to the general public, elite athletes and clinical populations she realizes the importance of inter-professional collaboration in assuring holistic care for the maintenance of health, the pursuit of excellence and in the treatment of illness. She is really excited to be a member of NaHSSA executive to promote IPE at the national level.

VP Communications | Ana Krause (Queen's University)

Ana Krause is entering her fourth year of nursing science at Queen’s University. Her involvement with the National Health Sciences Students’ Association began in the Fall of 2008 working with the 5th Annual Conference Planning Executive where she served as the marketing coordinator and career fair coordinator. Ana is also a member of the NaHSSA Advocacy Task Force that was established in March of 2009. She will be spending her summer working in Pediatric Oncology & Hematology at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and backpacking in Europe. As VP Communications, Ana will aim to increase student and public awareness of Interprofessionalism and of NaHSSA. She is looking forward to working with a great team throughout the year!

VP Chapter Development | Luciano Di Loreto (Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College)

Luciano Di Loreto is a fourth year Chiropractic student at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto, Ontario. In 2006, Luciano completed an Honours Bachelor of Science degree with high distinction in Sociology and Biological Anthropology at the University of Toronto. During his first year at CMCC, Luciano founded and was elected President of Building Bridges, a CMCC Interprofessional Student club. In the summer of 2008, Luciano participated in creating the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Council at CMCC and was elected President soon after. The IPE Council is the first ever CMCC student committee to have faculty mentors. Luciano has recently worked as a Student Intern at the Office of Interprofessional Education. During his stay at the office, he has worked diligently to plan an Ontario version of the Health Care Team Challenge. Luciano also holds an executive position on the University of Toronto Interprofessional Healthcare Students' Association (IPHSA).

VP Bilingualism | Melissa Langlois (Université Laval)

Melissa Langlois is an Occupational Therapy graduate student at the Laval University. In 2007, she was elected VP External Affairs for the Laval University’s Occupational Therapy Student Association (REEL). Because of her position, she had to be in different student association such as the University Student Association Confederation (CADEUL) and her local HSSA (RAESSUL). She was then elected to be VP External Affairs in her HSSA for the year 2008-2009. She was elected to the position of VP Bilingualism at the 4th NaHSSA conference in 2008 and re-elected in 2009. Her goal as VP Bilingualism is to ensure that French-Canadians can communicate as well with NaHSSA and that they don’t feel left behind. Being born in La Tuque (QC), she knows how frustrating it can be when you have to communicate in another language. To ensure that everyone will find what they need, she wants to help NaHSSA be a bilingual association.

Past President | Jason Nickerson (University of British Columbia)

Jason is the current past-president of the National Health Sciences Students’ Association (NaHSSA). Jason is a Registered Respiratory Therapist and is completing his Master’s degree at the University of British Columbia where he is examining the transition from education to practice in interprofessional education. In September, 2009, he will be beginning a PhD in Population Health at the University of Ottawa. In the past, Jason has held positions on the Steering Committee of the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC), the World Health Organization’s Study Group on Interprofessional Education and the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada’s (AFMC) Accreditation of Interprofessional Health Education (AIPHE) project.
